Types of Glaucoma

Types of Glaucoma

Glaucoma, a serious eye disease, can be categorized into four main types. These conditions occur when the optic nerve at the back of the eye is damaged. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. When it gets damaged, it can lead to vision loss. The damage to the optic nerve is often caused by elevated pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S. It is crucial to have all four types of glaucoma monitored by an eye doctor. When it's time to schedule your eye exams or seek other eye care services, contact our optometry office in Rohnert Park to make an appointment with one of our eye doctors at North Bay Optometric Vision Center.

Open-Angle Glaucoma

This is the most common type of glaucoma. The exact cause of increased eye pressure in these cases is unknown. Elevated eye pressure exerts pressure on the optic nerve, leading to the development of blind spots. This type of glaucoma tends to be hereditary and can run in families. If you have a family history of open-angle glaucoma, it is essential not to skip your regular eye exams to undergo appropriate testing.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the drainage of eye fluid is blocked, resulting in a rapid increase in eye pressure. This condition is considered an emergency. Certain medications and eye drops that dilate the eyes can cause this type of glaucoma. Having angle-closure glaucoma in one eye increases the risk of developing it in the other eye.

Congenital Glaucoma

Congenital glaucoma is present from birth and tends to be hereditary. It occurs when the eye does not develop properly in the womb.

Secondary Glaucoma

Secondary glaucoma is caused by identifiable factors. It can result from various diseases, such as diabetes, as well as eye injuries and eye diseases. Certain medications, including corticosteroids, can also induce secondary glaucoma.
