What Causes Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can cause blindness if it is left untreated. It occurs when pressure builds up inside of the eyes and causes damage to the optic nerve. Although glaucoma is fairly common in adults over 50, even children can be affected by it. Our doctors of optometry at North Bay Optometric Vision Center in Rohnert Park encourage people to get periodic comprehensive eye exams and glaucoma screenings. These tests can help ensure healthy eyes and overall well-being. If we see any early indications of glaucoma, we can help you before it becomes a serious issue.

What Is Glaucoma?

There is a small area at the front of the eye known as the anterior chamber. The clear fluid that supplies nutrients to the eye washes in and out of that chamber. When a person develops glaucoma, that fluid doesn't drain out of the eye fast enough. That causes the fluid to accumulate, and the pressure inside of the eye begins to build and become painful. Unless that pressure is relieved, other parts of the eye and the optic nerve can become permanently damaged and cause vision loss.

Glaucoma Treatment

Our doctors of optometry are specialists who are trained to detect and diagnose conditions or diseases of the eyes. Our optometrists can readily recognize and evaluate a patient with glaucoma. As per California law, our doctors are qualified to prescribe therapeutic eye drops as the first line of defense against glaucoma. Beyond that, we know when to refer a patient over to a different type of eye doctor, known as an ophthalmologist for further care and treatment.
