LASIK Eye Surgery

What Is Lasik Surgery?

Lasik involves a laser that is used to reshape your cornea. This allows the light to enter your eye correctly, allowing the retina to focus properly. There is no pain involved with this procedure, and it takes just 15 minutes to correct each eye.

Am I a Good Candidate For the Procedure?

Before the procedure, you would see your eye doctor for a consultation. During this appointment, your optometrist would run a few tests and ask questions to see if you are a good candidate.

  • Prescription check: Your eye doctor will perform a visual acuity exam to make sure that your prescription fits in the required parameters. If you are nearsighted, your prescription can be no higher than -11.00. If you are farsighted, your prescription can be no higher than +5.00. Astigmatism can be no higher than 5.00 to be a good candidate.
  • Eye health: Your eyes need to be mature and healthy to be a good candidate. Your eyes aren't mature until you are 18-years-old. If you have dry eye syndrome, glaucoma or macular degeneration, you wouldn't be a good candidate.
  • Physical health: You need to be healthy to be a good candidate. If you are pregnant or nursing you will need to wait to have the procedure. Certain diseases make you a poor candidate. These include autoimmune diseases, lupus, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Your optometrist will go over your medical history during your consultation.

Stop Wearing Contacts

If you are a good candidate for the procedure, you should stop wearing your contacts two weeks before the procedure. Contact lenses can change the shape of your cornea, and your corneas need to be shaped naturally for the surgery to be effective.

After the Surgery

Immediately after the procedure, your vision will be blurry. Therefore, you will need a ride home. When you get home, your eyes need to rest and taking a nap is recommended. If you cannot sleep, lie down with your eyes closed. To avoid rubbing your eyes while you sleep, wear your eye shields. You want to avoid any closeup work such as reading and using the computer. Also, don't watch television on the day of the procedure.

If your vision has stabilized, you can go to work a day or two after the procedure. It is best to refrain from strenuous exercise for a week after the procedure to prevent eye trauma and promote healing.
